Most often, American missionaries take our hymns, buildings, clothing, and leadership structures and tried to get foreign
believers in the new culture to adopt these customs.

We misunderstand even the practical / pastoral thrust of the Bible whenever we compare or equate it with the pastoral concerns of an established religion - with the maintenance of the life of parish and clan
in a society where there are no longer any challenges being addressed to the powers that be, no longer any
new believers coming
in across the boundaries of nation and
culture, and no longer any
new threatening issues needing to be wrestled with on the missionary frontier.
For me, when I realized that there was a spirituality that was developed by the early church — by the same community that wrote the
New Testament and would naturally understand it best — and that this spirituality had been practiced unchanged by

culture and time, I had to be there.

in Jesus through using the burial symbolism of their
