Choosing a role model and
hero who has accomplished the
kind of success you would like to have makes it easier to believe you can do it as
well.
And it's not like he was the random, temporary
kind of postseason
hero that October likes to jab in your eye: he was a young player, and getting
better.
Maybe not the Superman
kind of hero or the war veteran
kind, but to the stranded motorist, to the struggling mother who can't pay her grocery bill, he's a
hero of the

It's a throwback to that more innocent
kind of film, where you know who's
good and who's bad, where you boo the villain and cheer the
hero... The movie makes fun
of those clichés, but director George Lucas must love them too, because he makes them work.
You can't exactly call Alfonso Cuarón's Gravity the
best film
of its
kind, because it has no
kind: It stands alone as an extraordinary balance
of 3 - D effects,
heroes - in - jeopardy storytelling and emotional depth.
You see, I'm some
kind of,
well a big fucking hard
hero.
You could almost imagine the two films, or at least their
heroes, figuring in the
kind of good - natured, racial - stereotype humor that used to be a staple
of stand - up comedy (and was memorably parodied on «The Simpsons»): «white guys abolish slavery like this» (pass constitutional amendment); «but black guys, they abolish slavery like this» (blow up plantation).
That doesn't mean the movie escapes the intersectional nature
of this universe
of movies: There's a cameo from one superhero (
kind of a favor, since Thor appeared after the end credits
of that
hero's solo film), and the Hulk, as
well as his scientist counterpart Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo), has a supporting role.
The rivalry between the two suitors is
of the oldest
kind (
good vs. evil,
hero vs. villain, brother vs. brother), making Justified feel unexpectedly classic and still mercilessly exhilarating, as the pilot alone features three shootouts, one beating, one murder, and an explosion.
and other mythological creatures and then confronting a very pissed off Ares — before the
heroes finally have to find their way into the Underworld through a very odd, three - dimensionally moving labyrinth — a
kind of Greek - Deco - Escher construct that houses the film's
best practical effect — a completely physical, GC - unenhanced minotaur.
Like pretty much any superhero origin story, the setup was
better than the payoff, which, like far too many movies about the origin
of a superhero, pitted the newly formed
hero against a generic villain with an even more generic plan, as if that's some
kind of required challenge for these
heroes to have to face each and every time — even if we're just getting to know them.
Well I am happy to now know that Thor is now leading some
kind of ragtag team
of heroes (yes, that is including Loki) to save Asgard.
With its
best moments its most surprising, as when George sings a hymn at a family gathering, or when Ashley masturbates to a picture
of a happier time between she and her husband, Junebug is a fulsome, ebullient family drama
of the
best kind: the
kind where everybody's the villain and everybody's the
hero, and it's only the situation that defines their roles from moment to moment.
