I also have a great
beta reader group who are editors AND writers, so I saved on editing because we trade edits.
Depending on your subscription level, you have the option to be a part of
my Beta Reader group, who will give me feedback on drafts before they are ready for publication.
I only wish there was a well formed
beta readers group in India to smooth out the rough edges.
A couple of simple searches will show that there are many
beta reader groups on both Goodreads and Facebook.

It's always advantageous to be able to hand pick your
beta readers from communities you participate in, but if that's not possible, online crit
groups may yield worthwhile connections.
In Donovan's case, an option along these lines would be to use
beta readers rather than a critique

You might well also want to work with a workshop

An Indie writer has his
group of
beta -
reader, hires his proofreader, works with an editor and is in the black if his book is good.
Self - published writers frequently hear that they need to pass their books by
beta readers or critique
groups first before sending the stories on to freelance editors (fewer corrections in a book means a less expensive editing process).
Luckily, we have editors and critique
groups and
beta readers.

The best use of an editor is to polish a book that's already been workshopped in a

Beta Readers differs from what you get from a critique
group because
Betas generally read your whole manuscript in a week or two rather than over the span of months or years.

I do still encourage the use of critique
groups and
beta readers as a first step in learning the ins and outs of the craft and business of writing, but keep in mind that most of what you hear in a critique
group needs to be taken with a grain of salt.
Critique partners and
beta readers can serve the same function as a
group.
Some discussion about the difference between
beta reader and editor (see above)... and the
group is divided on the definition.
Jane Friedman's guest poster Brooke McIntyre has a nice list of places to connect with
beta readers or critique
groups.
Writing
groups,
beta readers, etc, all contribute to this.
I share excerpts with my critique
group and I have
beta readers who are generous with their time.
Beta readers are a trusted
group of people who evaluate your book from a
reader's perspective.
This is why I tend to prefer a critique
group to a
beta reader, so you get more of a diversity of opinion.
Groups of proven, practiced, seasoned
beta readers could step into that middle ground, schedule their work together, charge a respectable fee, run a simple site and listings for themselves, and get some authors past that friends - and - family alternative.
