A
beta reader could be someone from your writing or
reading group.
The main
group I've found who * can't *
beta read are those who aren't conscious of when they like or don't like something in a story (and thus can't provide any feedback about what's working or not working).
CS — Critique
groups are great for so many things, but they don't get the big picture, which is why
beta -
reads can be so valuable.
I had posted a cattle call for a few
beta readers in a FB writer's
group for a few
beta readers to
read my story.
Feedback from
Beta Readers differs from what you get from a critique
group because
Betas generally
read your whole manuscript in a week or two rather than over the span of months or years.
If you belong to an online writing or
reading group, some have files of
beta readers available or ask in forums.
I'd like such
groups of
betas to put together their credentials, some background on themselves, and offer their work, as units, to authors willing to go higher than $ 50 for the five
read - till - you - can't folks of the Howey plan.

beta read (with genre, page numbers, and timeframe), and you will be surprised by how many people offer their help.

And I could add to the advice about producing a quality product before publishing to run your work past some savvy
beta readers or a discerning critique
group to catch any parts that drag or are confusing, etc., then it would be best to get a professional edit from a reputable freelance editor who
reads and edits your genre.
Most authors have a
group of supporters who
read the book before it goes to editing, often referred to as «
beta readers.»

group can take the place of a manuscript reviewer, developmental and line editor, and act as your
beta -
reading group, too.
