Note that the dates do have a lot of sugar, but they have a lot of fiber and phytonutrients, too, which makes them a much better option than sugar (and they add a rich flavor).

Dates are really sweet so if you avoid sugar then they aren't great... but they are better than refined sugar I always think!
I use this recipe and add dates and groundnuts and seeds anything healthy, when I need a chocolate «fix» at least I know it's better than the sugar laden crap they pass off in the supermarkets.
