The simple conclusion: we need
better evaluations of both teachers and principals, and we need to use these in personnel decisions.

of teachers effective or
better.
In Michigan, 98 percent
of teachers were rated effective or
better under new

evaluation systems recently put in place.
In general, the
teachers» unions highlighted the potential
of better evaluations to provide valuable feedback on
teachers» skills.
Most
of the new data show that a great majority
of teachers score just as highly on the new
evaluations as they did on the previous ones, and it is unclear whether the reforms have systematically — or broadly — led to
teachers to receiving
better feedback that is translating to
better teaching.
Key findings from the
evaluation show that 70 per cent
of Key Stage 2 students felt they knew their
teachers better and 71 per cent felt they got on
better with their peers as a result
of their residential experiences.

Since the «right» model
of teacher evaluation or preparation is hardly self - evident, much less the «
best» way to help
teachers use new technologies like computer - assisted tutoring or online instruction, this natural variation provides an invaluable asset.
And, while they're at it, please also offer data, research, and
evaluation evidence that speak to the sorts
of questions I posed at the outset: How
well is differentiated instruction carried out and by how many
teachers?
Addressing the design flaws we have identified in
teacher evaluation systems will bring districts closer to achieving the primary goal
of meaningful
teacher evaluation: assuring greater equity in students» access to
good teachers.

Teachers can use this presentation to give a complete knowledge and understanding

Our own
evaluation studies have shown that in small schools students say their
teachers know them
better, care about them more, and have higher expectations
of them.
One
of the consequences
of it not being addressed is that
teachers who understand how the system works and value high
evaluation scores will do their
best to be assigned to schools with high ability students, and within schools will do their
best to get assigned the
best students.
And these
evaluation systems are strikingly
better than what they replaced: slapdash approaches involving a couple
of classroom visits by a building principal for some
teachers in some years that resulted in virtually all
teachers being classified as high performing.
The 2013 MET Project report found that weighting student growth between 33 and 50 percent
of a
teacher's
evaluation score would provide the
best combination
of predictive power and year - to - year stability.
Based on the literature reviews, observations in the schools and meetings with the departments at the Ministry
of Education, the team presented several key policy considerations to the Ministry: (1) utilize a website, the National Play Day, and the Jamaican Teaching Council as platforms from which educators can develop and share
best game - based learning practices; (2) promote a culture
of collaboration through the Quality Education Circles (local discussion groups for educators), and by allocating time for
teachers to develop and share game - based learning strategies; (3) provide resource support for schools in the form
of workshops and training; and (4) create a monitoring and

Let's hope that Seattle and Baltimore are a stronger indication
of the future

of DC and that when properly engaged, unions can embrace the idea
of teacher evaluations that include a component for student performance as
well as compensation packages that are linked to evidence
of effective teaching practices.
Cohen and Walsh point out that it is state law which drives tenure policy and which frequently mandates much
