In this lesson, students will use information about the connection
between changes in biodiversity and changes in water quality to articulate criteria and constraints for a water filter design.

The importance of connectivity
between coffee and protected areas is tremendous, given the overlap and proximity of
biodiversity hotspots and coffee - growing regions (Hardner and Rice 2002) and the importance of shaded coffee
in the face of global climate
change.
Therefore, the relationships
between biodiversity and ecosystem functions have to be quantified,
in order to predict the consequences of either
changing ecosystem functions or decreases
in biodiversity.
The study presented here highlights current knowledge gaps and provides research recommendations so that ecologists can gain a deeper understanding of the linkages
between biodiversity and ecosystem stability
in a
changing world.
Ecosystem - based approaches provide an important route to sustainable action and represent a vital insurance policy against irreversible damage from climate
change, whereas failure to acknowledge the relationship
between climate
change and
biodiversity and failure to act swiftly and
in an integrated manner could undermine efforts for improvements
in both areas.
There is concern
in the scientific community that the temperature
change from now to the end of the century will be roughly the same as the difference
between now and the last Ice Age, which occurred 10,000 years ago, resulting
in dramatic
changes in temperature, weather patterns, water tables, land and
biodiversity.
It especially explores links
between climate
change and hydrology, including impacts of climate
change on: ecosystems and
biodiversity, agriculture and food security, urbanization, land use and forestry, water supply and sanitation, health, infrastructure, and energy security which,
in addition to climate, are strongly influenced by human interventions and actions.
The danger
in the current GW is not due to the difference
between a stable climate at average 15oC (your current average temperature numbers are wrong) and a stable climate at average 20 or 22 or 25oC or what have you, it is due to the extremely rapid rate of
change and the resulting instability and the loss of
biodiversity.
This multinational effort is being designed to identify
biodiversity changes within a reasonable timeframe, to identify possible links
between biodiversity trends and anthropogenic stressors, and to make information available and useful to managers
in developing strategies for sustainable use of Arctic living resources.
