From numerous studies in the Xenopus paired oocyte system and various cell culture systems, a reasonable assumption might be that if two cells express the same
connexin or innexin and lie in close membrane apposition, gap junctions will probably be established
between them; this assumption has not been investigated rigorously in vivo.
