In English and language arts, you'd see more of a focus on nonfiction «a slight shift in the balance
between fiction and nonfiction, favoring a greater emphasis on nonfiction since this is what people are typically
reading in careers and so forth.
But, if executed correctly, she says schools should be challenging students to «
read fiction like writers» — dissecting the connections
between craft and theme, for instance — while also giving them time to experiment with less analytical forms of writing.
Before Common Core, students in most high school English classes
read mostly literature, but the reality now is that students must split their time
between fiction and nonfiction.
In the meantime, he asked secondary schools to allocate
reading time of
between 15 and 30 minutes, and ensure pupils are
reading fiction or non-
fiction more in line with their age — possibly by asking older pupils to recommend more difficult books to one another.
Common Core calls for a more even split
between fiction and nonfiction
reading, and with that shift comes a decline in emphasis on
reading simply for comprehension's sake.

A quick summation: yes, there is a difference
between genre
fiction and literary
fiction; no, genre
fiction is not necessarily «lower» than literary
fiction or mere escapism; yes, literary
fiction has just as many cliches and tropes as genre
fiction; and yes, there are many examples of top quality work and utter crap in both categories, and people shouldn't pigeon - hole their
reading habits to solely one or the other.
Nonfiction is unique, in that readers may jump
between chapters, which differentiates it from
fiction, where the author wants the reader to
read from start to finish.
Between now and June 1, it falls to the
reading fans of general and young adult
fiction to
read the excerpts and make the difficult choice of promoting the next popular novel.
