The artists draw on an ancient tradition of Mary as herself a
voracious reader, stewed in holy Scriptures, and a notion, then commonplace, of the affinity
between the intellectual and spiritual lives, of the «garden enclosed» where the God of truth meets the believer, set apart from the
demands of the world.
