I love how you have a piece written buy a guy who knows more about what the
bible says in and out and in different translations than any poster here, someone who has
studied it for years and years, knows its history, and the history of the time it was written, but people still don't believe what he is saying
because of what they hear from a preacher on Sunday mornings.

I am not saying that the
bible doesn't contain many examples of telling the faithful to dig deeper, to
study more & grow closer to God through the
study of the scriptures, but it NEVER says «Go ahead and
study what other religions have to offer
because it will only give you stronger faith in the
bible».
It's topics like this that a lot of thorough
study of original context of the original documents are required,
because there are lots of verses that suggest faith alone is required for salvation and others that suggest that faith plus consistent good behavior are required and the
bible can't contradict itself if it's inspired by God.
After all these years of
study, of experience, of seeing others change, and becoming a different person myself, my belief system has gone a long way from «
because the
bible says so» to lets see everything the
bible has to say about it, what was going on then, who it was said to, and what it means in the context of life today.
I too get disgusted at those who claim the faith, never pray, never
study their
bible, never reach others but speak with anger and hate
because that is NOT our faith in Christ!
I know many atheists who are atheists precisely
because they started reading and
studying the
bible critically, rather than just taking it as truth without consideration.
There are many historians that
study these times who seem pretty convinced that this really happened I read a couple of books along time ago that made a convincing case, I realize that doesn't make it so, I think it is true
because the red letters of the
bible have power.
The reason I reject it is
because I know (after extensive
study) that the
bible is NOT clear on any single sexual ethic.
Genuine believers avoid interpreting scripture for themselves like the plague
because as they
study they learn that the
bible interprets itself and our duty is to let it do that for us and for God's glory.
Christians agree with one another (just do a
bible study of all the «one anothers»)
because Christians love God so they love Gods word so they
study Gods word and they let Gods word speak to them without forcing their own interpretation on Gods word.

bible but always put it off
