A traditional Irish loaf that uses
bicarbonate of soda instead of yeast - this version is sweetly spiced with fruit and oats
I used 3/4 teaspoon of
bicarbonate of soda instead of the half recommended (using non Dutch cocoa — Van Houten) and it came together REALLY nicely.

A typical Irish - American St. Patrick's Day dinner wouldn't be complete without a good
soda bread, named so because
of the use
of baking
soda (or sodium
bicarbonate) as the leavening agent
instead of yeast.
And I used 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
instead as I didn't have any
bicarbonate of soda in my cupboard.
It's very similar to the Nigella one linked above but uses baking powder along with the
bicarbonate of soda and butter milk
instead of sour cream.
