Biennials — one
of the country's most highly regarded
surveys of the latest developments in American art — have been organized collectively by multiple curators.
The country's preeminent
survey of the current state
of American art, this is the seventy - eighth in the Museum's ongoing series
of Annuals and
Biennials, initiated by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney in 1932.
The Arts Council had invited Andrew Forge, a painter as well as an art critic, to organise the exhibition which was the second in a projected series
of biennial surveys.
But more to the point, in the last year and a half my students at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf and I have begun a study
of exhibition types, an attempt as a group to create a typological study
of exhibition forms — the monographic or
survey show
of an individual artist, thematic or historical group exhibition, international
biennial, etc..
It may turn out that the
biennial is the stepchild
of the Whitney's «American Century»
survey, widely criticized for its lack
of a coherent mission.

This year presents more artists in more parts
of the state than ever before, with Blue Star Contemporary Art Museum in San Antonio housing the main
survey exhibition, Ballroom Marfa co-commissioning an artist project from The Dallas Collective, Lawndale Art Center in Houston showcasing recent work by four Texas
Biennial «stars» with the Texas
Biennial Invitational, and Big Medium in Austin featuring past
biennial entries and recent work by selected Texas
Biennial artists in New and Greatest Hits: Texas
Biennial 2005 - 2011.
The main
survey exhibition continues to stake its claim as the cornerstone and centerpiece
of the
biennial.
In November, a special
survey of his work opens at Prospect 4 at the New Orleans Museum
of Art, organized by Trevor Schoonmaker, the
biennial's artistic director and a close friend, fan, and collaborator
of the artist.
The Museum
of Modern Art's reboot
of its annual «New Photography»
survey, now a
biennial with an expanded, global artist list, tries to keep pace with the fluid, anything - goes field
of photography today.
Matt Packer will be the new director
of EVA International, the Irish
biennial that
surveys the contemporary art scene.
Since there is no comparable
survey of modern American art, the
biennial — which opens at the Whitney on March 23 and will remain on view until June 4 — has a special imprimatur.
Building on its tradition
of doing large group
surveys of local artists, the Hammer Museum's current
biennial has an unusually tight focus: L.A. artists.
