Jason from MNPP here with this week's «Beauty vs Beast» contest - we've been more or less working our way through the year's
big awards contenders over the past few weeks, with a Three Billboards here and a Phantom Thread there, and knowing what you know about my oft - expressed personal... predilections... you'd be forgiven for expecting a proper Call Me By Your Name showdown at some point.
The 2016 Napa Film Festival, kicking off November 9th, has set up quite an impressive slate of
big awards contenders including Lion, 20th Century Women, Elle, and Miss Sloane, which closes the festival on the 13th.
For those who don't know, most studios use the fall film festivals as a kind of launching pad for
their big awards contenders.
Opening on Christmas Day, it seems to me that it will make a better trip to the movies for older families (no young kids) than would some of
the big award contenders.
Call Me By Your Name, which is also
a big awards contender this year, receiving the most Independent Spirit Award nominations, grossed nearly $ 405K in just four New York and L.A. theaters.
The other
big awards contender, The Shape of Water, won the second highest number of awards, with Guillermo del Toro bagging Best Director, composer Alexandre Desplat collecting Original Music and the Production Design team also honoured.

Part love story, part adventure (the plot revolves around what happens when their ship carrying thousands of sleeping passengers starts to malfunction), the movie could be the
award show's
big - budget
contender.
And for Joe Hart to come through as a talisman, having beaten the
big names like David Silva, Mario Balotelli, Gareth Barry and having ousted Shay Given from his throne, there is no doubt that he is a strong
contender for the PFA
award.

contenders for 2017 honors: Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out), Florence Pugh (Lady Macbeth), Josh O'Connor (God's Own Country), Tessa Thompson (Thor Ragnarok), and Timothée Chalamet (Call Me By Your Name and Lady Bird).
So, seizing the opportunity of a sympathetic audience, and amidst a season where many of the 84 movies put forward by their home countries as Academy
Award contenders are floating around at festivals —
big and small, rural and urban, American and elsewhere — I thought I'd weigh in on the titles I've caught.
Regardless of how much
big - screen work they've done before, they make up one of the best ensemble casts of the year, but standing first among them is Tessa Thompson, who gives a revelatory performance that in a just world would be a serious
awards contender.

Whether or not he's telling the truth remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: with Anderson behind the camera and a cast that includes Hoffman, Amy Adams and Joaquin Phoenix (making his
big screen return after wasting the last few years making «I'm Still Here»), «The Master» will likely be a
contender in nearly every major category come
awards time.
