Even though General Motors is slowly recovering from several years of billion
dollar losses, the world's
biggest automaker still has more problems than a calculus

If you were investing hundreds of thousands of
dollars on a
bigger author... would you invest your money if they might be competing with the
books you just paid for?
Self published authors have to rely on their own resources, be more creative in finding retail shelf space for their
books (as a rule, self published authors have far less access to chain bookstore shelves than the
big publishers who spend millions on marketing
dollars), and have to work very hard to create any sort of buzz about their
books.
Pricing won't matter so much for these later
books, because if somebody knows about and wants to read your
books, an extra
dollar or two is no
big deal.
Face it: Your
book is competing with millions of other titles — many by
Big Name authors from major publishers — for the attention, consideration, and purchasing
dollars of your target reader.
This is
big money and pirates are starting to capitalize on the demand for free
books by leverage advertising networks to rake in millions of
dollars a year.
Sure, you can't technically have your
book available on other platforms, such as Kobo or Barnes and Noble, but free loans equate to some
big dollars.
Baen
Books is the only close to
big publisher who I know is doing it right: all e-
books are sold at a maximum price of $ 6.00, the author gets more
dollars out of that price than he does out of the hard copy sales, and there's no DRM locking the text down and keeping the user from moving what he has purchased to whatever platform he wants to put it on.
There is a darn good reason why the
BIG publishing companies pay hot - shot graphic designers THOUSANDS of
dollars to design their
book covers.

They've written to market, have 10 (or more)
books out (and they're good, follow tropes, etc) have great blurbs, great covers, a
big mailing list, a free reader magnet, and use thousands of
