Big Year is completely predictable
and full of way too many bird - watching montages set to inspiring
music, but it's such an upbeat, cheery
film that it's pretty hard to resist.
By 2015, an entire fleet of
music aspirants has fled the über - gentrified
Big Apple in search of cheaper rent, suntans
and film & TV sync licenses, once again turning Los Angeles into Pop Central Station.

Everyone's favourite characters, much of the surreal narration (delivered with perfect dryness by Stephen Fry),
and the original's distinctive theme
music, are all present
and accounted for —
and in an age where CGI has become the slick new medium for special visual effects, an inordinate amount of physical modelling
and creature puppetry have been used to give the
film a refreshingly organic retro look, as though the crew from the original TV series had been lured back to their old tools by a much
bigger budget.
The original
music, a
big part of the
film, sounds smooth
and feels immmersive.
My
biggest heros in this art are Bernard Herrmann («Psycho», «Taxi Driver», «Citizen Kane», «Vertigo»)
and Jerry Goldsmith («The Omen», «Poltergeist», «Basic Instinct»,» Papillon»), both of whom were pioneers in understanding the psychology of
film and communicating drama through
music,
and I'm doing my best to follow in their example,
and try to be one of the more considerate
film composers out there... so, I was anxious to hear back if they agreed I hit the bullseye, blind.
The
music and songs of Inside Llewyn Davis, a mix of preexisting
music and brand new tunes written expressly for the
film, are bolstered by Isaac's dynamite voice
and performances (the
biggest track, «Fare Thee Well (Dink's Song),» is a stunner),
and reinforce the central themes of the
film with ease.
Most famous for performances behind the CGI - created Gollum in Lord of the Rings
and King Kong in Peter Jackson's remake, Andy Serkis looks like a mad troll
and embraces the look in his incarnation of Ian Dury, the
music - hall showman of the British punk scene who hit it
big with the song immortalized in the
film's title
and embraced fame with the same excess with which he embraced booze
and drugs.
There has also been no shortage of celebrity endorsement for what many are labelling «the most important Marvel
film to date», as everyone from athletes in the NBA, to some of the
biggest music artists in the world,
and even members from the superhero universe in Captain Marvel's lead, Brie Larson, have contributed to the hype.
Rob Marshall, the talented filmmaker behind the Academy Award ® - winning musical «Chicago»
and Disney's «Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,» helms the
film, which is based on the Tony ® - winning original musical by James Lapine, who also penned the screenplay,
and legendary composer Stephen Sondheim, who provides the

big way, going all - out with the spectacle, marrying the memorable
music with Viabhav Merchant's creative choreography
and a stunning, silhouette - driven visual design.
Like Michael Dubo de Wit's remarkable
film that draws upon the pastel naturalism of Hayao Miyazaki's Studio Ghibli for what might be their best
film in a line of classics, Del Mar's
music is the equivalent of those soft brushstrokes on a
big screen canvas of visual poetry, a score that profoundly captures a life at first seemingly lost at sea, only to soar under,
and above it though its graceful
music that touches the silent tides of nature's life force.
Scored to Joan Jett's «Bad Reputation», it's also another example of the
film's flawless
music choices, which include superb use of Sparks» «This Town Ain't
Big Enough for the Both of Us»,
and Gnarls Barkley's «Crazy».
Much like Kosinski, their
music was a
big part of what made the
film work,
and even four
and a half years later, that soundtrack is still played on a weekly basis on my iPod.
