We know the answer to those questions: the money and influence of Big Food, and a moral failure by this Congress to stand up for the health of American kids.
Another factor is the SNA's cozy relationship with Big Food, which funds at least half of the organization's operating budget.
Congress did pass legislation mandating that nutrition standards be written for competitive foods in schools but Big Food (the companies that brought you «Pizza is a vegetable») is lobbying overtime to ensure that these standards are weakened and delayed.
There is no way that the U.S. is going to turn around its nutrition problems without the participation of Big Food — the U.S. market is simply too large and diverse.
Last month, I witnessed it for myself and discovered the corporate takeover by Big Food was worse than I even imagined.

Many of my fellow food advocates have pointed to the fact that the SNA takes a significant amount of money from corporate «patrons» like ConAgra and PepsiCo, and they therefore allege that SNA's entire effort is being directed by Big Food.
But just because some of SNA's goals align with Big Food's doesn't mean there aren't other reasons why SNA is asking for these changes.
As of July 1, when the next phase of HHFKA's more stringent school nutrition standards will be implemented, SNA's influential Big Food and Beverage patrons will no longer be able to sell or serve many of their ultra-processed junk food products in the nation's schools.
