Books sold into bookstores is becoming something only reserved for the brand

big, breakout books that are
getting a lot of buzz.
Simon & Schuster isn't the only major publisher to sign up with Oyster and Scribd, but it is still a major «
get» for both services thanks to the number of
big name books and
authors in the publisher's catalog.
We've
got some

authors in it.

name authors where the rest of the series is in print from a more, shall we say, traditional publisher.

get their books in front of audiences.

big name authors, if they are going through a publisher, they tend to have enough clout to push back against editor suggestions, so said drivel
gets through.
They are trying to
get the
big name authors and agents to fight for it under the «fair contract initiative».
New novels are regularly published by
big name authors such as Jeffery Deaver, Dean Koontz and James Patterson, but indie
authors have no way to
get involved in the program unless they use a secret email address to
get in touch with the editorial team.
And, if you're up on things, I probably don't have to inform you of a recent letter from some of the top
big name authors requesting letters be sent to Amazon's Jeff Bezos in order to save
authors and writing and literature and to let Hachette
get its way.

I often speak with
authors who want to hire us to
get them early endorsements for their book and are ready with the wish list of
big names.
The
big name authors and the celebrities whose books don't perform to expectation are untouched; the
author who
gets a reasonable advance and whose book sells much better than expected are the ones who suffer the greatest loss.
A lot of
big name authors see their website as something the publisher should do and they therefore
get updated once every couple of years when a new book comes out.
Some new
authors may hope to
get their
names out there, but even some very experienced writers and
big publishing houses run free promotions on science fiction, fantasy, and other book genres in order to increase their readership.
When everyone is forced to sell their books at deep discount, even the
big names, do you realistically think anyone is going to read books by no -
names when you can
get proven
authors at the same price?
Big name authors in the trad pub world have lots of incentives to stay (they
get lots of marketing $ and support).
Some of our
bigger -
name authors continue to see print growth, but with so many bookstores facing financial problems, it's harder to
get them to take a chance on new
authors than it used to be.
Also, while dinosaurs, some of the
big six may survive if they gut their marketing departments (or spin these off as add agencies focused on top 10
authors only), define more standard T&C s (which they will
get away with with their new
authors, whereas the
big names who could negotiate a better deal will anyway be hiring editors by the hour and publishing direct on amazon etc) and change business model to promote not
authors (who are fundamentally un-ownable now you can easily self or amazon publish) but rather their own editorial abilities.
Since
getting my device, I've stopped buying print fiction for the reasons I gave you above... tired of paying inflated prices in Irish bookstores, could buy great stories that are only on digital, access to thousand of small presses... and not having to rely on what the

author didn't have anything to do with it.

Much as I love self - publishing, even in the current market, I think I am more likely to be able to
