BIG BUDGET FILMS August Rush (PG for slight violence, mild profanity and mature
themes) Freddie Highmore stars as the title character in this escapist fantasy about a promising musical prodigy who runs away from an orphanage to New York City to find his parents (Keri Russell and Jonathan Rhys Myers) only to end up living with a Fagin - like wizard (Robin Williams) and lots of other kids in a makeshift shelter in an abandoned theater which was once the Fillmore East.
Everyone's favourite characters, much of the surreal narration (delivered with perfect dryness
by Stephen Fry), and the original's distinctive
theme music, are all present and accounted for — and in an age where CGI has become the slick new medium for special visual effects, an inordinate amount of physical modelling and creature puppetry have been used to give the film a refreshingly organic retro look, as though the crew from the original TV series had been lured back to their old tools
by a much
bigger budget.
The music and songs of Inside Llewyn Davis, a mix of preexisting music and brand new tunes written expressly for the film, are bolstered
by Isaac's dynamite voice and performances (the
biggest track, «Fare Thee Well (Dink's Song),» is a stunner), and reinforce the central
themes of the film with ease.
