deal of the year: Glencore (glncy), the world's
biggest commodities house, and the Qatar Investment Authority had agreed to buy a 19.5 % stake in Rosneft, Russia's national
oil champion, for 10.5 billion euros ($ 11.1 billion).
Many of Shell and BG's
big shareholders have voiced support for the
deal but a slump in
oil prices below $ 30 a barrel has raised concerns that Shell may be overpaying for the smaller rival.

bigger gave them more pricing power when
dealing with
oil service contractors and greater leverage when negotiating with foreign governments.
