After teaching for six years, being trained in various methodologies and attending over 120
births as a
birth doula, and a Master's degree; it is hard for me to tell you exactly
how a
class will shape itself.
The after -
birth or reunion
class also gives participants an opportunity to reflect on what their
birth experience taught them and
how they are continuing to use their mindfulness practice to meet the joys and challenges of parenting their newborn.
If your
class is taught at your birthing location, you will learn a lot about the culture of
birth at that location (or,
how they recommend that you
birth your baby), and your childbirth educator will do her / his best to provide a brief overview of coping techniques with any remaining time.
Therefore, a childbirth education
class helps moms and their partners learn about and believe in the process, about
how their bodies and babies really instinctually know what to do, about normalcy in labor and
birth, about the importance of relaxation, about
how to gain confidence and find their inner strength.
If she has questions about
how your
birth plan is laid out, or if she doesn't have any
birth experience, bring her to a childbirth
class with you.
Birth partners will leave this
class with a deep understanding about
how touch and intimacy can impact a person in labor.
Yes, they provide a lot of information about
births and
how, why, when they happen but in reality women leave those
classes in more fear and confusion that they came in with.
Then I took few of those general
birth classes in the hospital just to realize that they don't teach women
how to
birth.

Classes You Do and Don't Need
My wife & I had such a positive childbirth
class experience in most part because we found a
class that reflected our values: We wanted to learn
how to gain more control of childbirth decision - making,
how to make sure our
birth plan was being considered, and
how to enjoy the process as much as possible.
One that Krysia suggested though was that we go to the hospital antenatal
classes too so that we could get a picture of
how they expected labour and
birth to progress and so that we would know what their policies were.
This
class covers topics such as, breastfeeding friendly labor and
birth practices, latch and positioning techniques, hand expression, normal newborn feeding behaviors, managing engorgement,
how to know your baby is transferring milk and troubleshooting difficulties.
CHELSEA POWELL: For me I think I kind of found it through two different ways and the we took a like a you know a
class for our
birth and the other couples in the
class the other moms in the group where just people that were we were all similar in age and just you know it was all our first kids and kind of similar life paths and what we were
how we were wanting to like
birth our children and we kind of raise them.
Ask about breastfeeding
classes before
birth and find out which lactation consultants you can see after you leave the hospital and
how many visits are covered.
By the time the teacher at our hospital
birth class announced that she wouldn't explain
how to use formula because it was against hospital regulations, I was pretty fed up.
The quantity of
classes, techniques, theories, and books about
how to
birth a baby are intense.
Over the course of 8 weeks, we attended
classes together and learned about the stages of labor and
how he could be a part of the
birth process.
Class will include: Gestation and anatomy, nutrition, preparing your body and
how to adapt to the changes,
birth plans, labor support, your partner as a coach, stages of labor, interventions, inductions, C - sections, breathing, relaxation, pain management techniques, breastfeeding, newborn procedures, and postpartum health.
