They're pleasurable partly because they don't have the polish and sheen often expected of photographs, but some recall his early still lifes, things that were very much influenced by photography at Black Mountain College.

Reflecting on her life as a designer, she chose motifs for the prints based on her work from particular years: two from the 1920s, when Albers was at the Bauhaus and met her life - long partner and later husband Josef; two from the 1940s, when the couple taught at the experimental Black Mountain College in North Carolina after having fled Nazi Germany; three from the late 1950s to the early «70s, after they resettled in Orange, Connecticut and Josef served as Yale University's Chair of the Department of Design; and two from the early 1980s, after Josef's death.

Also included are paintings with graphic optical effects that Asawa made at Black Mountain College and works on paper of plant life that she drew from direct observation, without lifting her marker.

Operating in a relatively isolated location away from the clutches of urban life, the Black Mountain College inspired an informal and collaborative spirit — such a manner attracted a venerable roster of instructors despite the school's infamously restrictive budget.

The inspiration: Visionary communities and artist colonies such as the MacDowell Colony and Black Mountain College, with their emphasis on quiet independent retreat balanced with communal living, and the value placed on the individual's role in shaping the experience.
