JUSTIFICATION Established to protect the local population
of Black Howler Monkeys through community participation in appropriate land management.
Here, we define clear patterns of variation in the GI microbiomes of six groups of
Mexican black howler monkeys (Alouatta pigra) occupying a gradation of habitats including a continuous evergreen rainforest, an evergreen rainforest fragment, a continuous semi-deciduous forest and captivity.
Families can see the
endangered black howler monkey at the Community Baboon Sanctuary, big cats like pumas and jaguars at the Belize Zoo (an animal sanctuary), or hike through Cockscomb Basin Reserve to see Baird's tapir, Belize's national animal.

A large population of
Black Howler Monkeys locally known as baboons are protected in a nature preserve called The Community Baboon Sanctuary as a result all other flora and fauna in this area are preserved as well.
Established in 1985, this baboon sanctuary was set up as a cooperative agreement among 12 local farmers and landowners in Bermudian Landing who voluntarily agreed to preserve the area's
black howler monkey habitat.
