Forest fires produced much of the Arctic
soot before 1850, but between the late 1880s and 1950, industrial
black carbon
pollution predominated.
Increase of Earth's energy imbalance from reduction of particulate air
pollution, which is needed for the sake of human health, can be minimized via an emphasis on reducing absorbing
black soot [75], but the potential to constrain the net increase of climate forcing by focusing on
black soot is limited [76].
However, by aggressively cutting emissions of
soot (
black carbon), methane and air
pollution (specifically tropospheric ozone), we can reduce the speed that the situation worsens.
With IdleAir, truck stop communities enjoy cleaner air with the reduction of
black carbon and
soot that emit from diesel engines, reduced noise
pollution, local job creation, and an increased tax base for the local economy.
Dark
pollution particles popularly known as
soot but also called
black carbon probably contribute overall to global warming.
Black soot is generated from industrial
pollution, traffic, outdoor fires, and household burning of coal and biomass fuels.
There is one aspect of climate change that is not fully established: the role of aerosol
pollution (aka global dimming) from mainly from sulfates and
soot (
black carbon and organic carbon).
Increase of Earth's energy imbalance from reduction of particulate air
pollution, which is needed for the sake of human health, can be minimized via an emphasis on reducing absorbing
black soot [75], but the potential to constrain the net increase of climate forcing by focusing on

pollution (especially
black soot) has a greenhouse effect.
Instead of fixing the
black carbon (
soot)
pollution they are responsible for, the EU activists continue to rail about the atmospheric trace gas CO2, which, by the way, doesn't melt glaciers, sea ice or polar ice sheet caps.
Carbon
soot gets blame for Arctic Ice Melt: Oil industry and household stoves speed Arctic thaw Gas flaring by the oil industry and smoke from residential burning contributes more
black carbon
pollution to Arctic than previously thought — potentially speeding the melting of Arctic sea ice and contributing to the fast rate of warming in...
With that comes more
black carbon air
pollution from ships —
soot to you and me — and, that means already disproportionately high levels of warming will increase and with those, more ice melting.
Other impacts of human civilization, such as deforestation and other changes to land use,
pollution and
black soot landing on Arctic snows also contribute to warming.
A lot of folks, including myself, think that the recent melting of Arctic sea ice and rising Arctic temperatures is more attributable to Asian
black carbon
pollution than to CO2 and greenhouse gas warming (particularly since similar warming and sea ice melting is not seen in the Antarctic, where there is not a problem with
soot pollution).
The bulk of these other forcings, specifically
black carbon (
soot) aerosols, tropospheric ozone and methane, are prime ingredients of air
pollution.
Mixed with
pollution, dust and
black carbon (
soot) from India and elsewhere, this spreads a brown cloud across swaths of the Eurasian landmass.
We also emit conventional
pollution, causing
black soot and aerosols that have differing (and debated) effects on climate.
