A new trailer for the coming
superhero movie
Black Panther came
out in a TV commercial Monday, during the College Football Playoff National Championship.
It is also The Void that creates Michael B. Jordan's Erik Killmonger, the antagonist of
Black Panther, cousin to Chadwick Boseman's protagonist King T'Challa and a comic - book villain so transcendent that he is almost
out of place in a film about a
superhero who dresses as a cat.
Like last summer's cure for the common
superhero blockbuster, the DC Comics ringer «Wonder Woman,» «
Black Panther» fleshes
out a beautifully functioning society far from the prying, destructive eyes of the outside world.
Coogler has set
out to do something with the modern
black superhero that all previous iterations have fallen short of doing: making it respectable, imaginative and powerful.
As Rotten Tomatoes points
out,
Black Panther's score will continue to fluctuate throughout its theatrical run, but for now, it's the highest - rated
superhero film on the review - aggregate website.

Though it's not the first
black superhero movie, it is the first one to portray a futuristic, dignified vision of Africa, free from the trauma of colonialism but still tackling difficult subjects head on (another thing critics have pointed
out as a resounding positive).

Avengers: Infinity War, which releases on April 27, will bring together
superheroes from different worlds — the Avengers, Spider - Man,
Black Panther, Doctor Strange and Guardians of the Galaxy, to battle Thanos who is
out to collect all the Infinity Stones to destroy and attain his supremacy in the entire universe.
These factors are what ultimately raise
Black Panther above much of the same old
superhero movies featuring mostly white people performing the same old stunts in the cliched confrontations for their cliched space in the myopic realm of action movies of good versus «evil» churned
out by Hollywood for too many decades.
Shane
Black's
superhero opus is basically a cousin to Lethal Weapon, but with a dude who shoots missiles
out of his shoulders.
Ultimately,
Black Panther is a remarkable accomplishment in or
out of the comic - book
superhero genre, a feat that seemingly runs counter to homogenized, corporate product, especially from the Disney - owned Marvel Studios, but credit to über - producer Kevin Feige for giving Coogler the virtual green light to deliver the
Black Panther moviegoers didn't know they needed, let alone wanted.
Now that Chadwick Boseman's Wakandan
superhero is an uncontested A-lister, the performance of
Black Panther could see Marvel confidently drop his sequel during prime time movie - going season in the summer: May 1 or July 31, 2020 and May 7 or July 30, 2021 aren't
out of the question.
Of course,
Black Panther remains a Marvelized
superhero story, with everything that implies, including periodic action scenes pitting T'Challa in and
out of the weaponized
Black Panther costume taking down foes.
Females also turned
out in force to see
Black Panther, heralded for its portrayal of strong women, making up 45 percent of all ticket buyers (that share is usually 35 percent to 40 percent on a
superhero movie's opening weekend).
Ever since he first appeared in Captain America: Civil War to confirm that, yes,
Black Panther is very cool, we've been waiting for the first teaser of Chadwick Boseman's solo
superhero outing.
Superhero costumes all seem to be a mixture between Spandex and extra-small polyester and while the
Black Panther costume came
out looking pretty awesome, the original versions of the costume took Spandex to a whole new level.
While
Black Panther makes no great leap forward from the tried and true (or tired and true, depending on your threshold for repetition)
superhero movie story arc, what this category of films lack in plot originality,
Black Panther makes up for in casting, art direction, costume design, and writing (the sharp yet casual one - liners calling
out colonialism, white privilege, and the American superiority complex both zing and sting — as they should).
Black Panther stands
out as a groundbreaker not just within the
superhero genre, but in Hollywood in general — from the Gil Scott Heron track sampled throughout the trailer, to the Kendrick Lamar soundtrack, to the hair and makeup and set design, to Coogler's vision of what an African, technological utopia could look like (Wakanda is a capital city that's nothing like the Western or Asian - influenced visions of the future we know well — one of the most notable differences?
But, as we know from many things, including the entertainment industry's persistent neglect of
black and Latino audiences and its slowness to greenlight
superhero movies with female leads, Hollywood is not the purely rational business it likes to make itself
out to be.
Black Panther, not in theatres until February 16, has already sold more advanced tickets than any other movie to come
out of the Marvel
superhero - movie - making machine.

Black Panther is a Marvel Comics
superhero with his own movie coming
out in February.
It may seem
out of place in a
superhero game, but could be an effective style of gameplay for ranged characters like
Black Widow and Hawkeye who can't take hits as well as their fellow Avengers.
If I swap
out Captain America (my favorite Avenger) for
Black Widow (the least powerful Avenger) because she is the most capable
superhero for that specific task (and it's still fun!)
That period appears to be over, as
superheroes now continuously have their very own recreation collection impartial of movies, and this week's
Black Panther launch will go with
out an accompanying recreation.
