It's why I think the Pitches and
Blurbs Workshop that is starting here today is the most important workshop we do for indie
writers and for traditional
writers.
In indie publishing, most
writers spend little or no attention to writing a
blurb.
That's one of the many reasons Kris and I have always taught
writers to learn how to write good cover copy and
blurbs that will sell.
As I start this, a bunch of
writers are coming into town to attend a «Pitches and
Blurb» writing workshop here.
I'm spending four days with a group of professional
writers here on the coast, teaching them how to write
blurbs for their covers letters to editors and to give editors help when a book sells.
And for heaven's sake, understand sampling and indie publishing and cover design and
blurb writing and apps and all the basic skills needed by
writers these days.

I had to turn down a thriller
writer who wanted me to
blurb her book.
Indie
writer must now either design a cover, or hire the cover done, write
blurbs for the novel, set up accounts with different stores and printers and distributors.
The problem with publishing today, though, is that its driven by greed, and that's driving debut
writers to self - publish rather than risk getting rejected because a) they didn't walk into the toilet stall of their favorite author and politely ask for a
blurb, or b) they discovered they'd rather spend what free time they have writing, and not marketing or frequenting social venues to make connections that may or may not pan out.
To be honest, the
blurb sells me more than the author's name except for my
writer friends» books.
I have some great
writers» sayings that I admire; a handful of positive Chinese fortune - cookie
blurbs; the query letter for the novel that is currently being shopped by my agent; a few photos that inspire me; and lastly, a short and long version of a mantra I repeat EVERY DAY (the shorter version can be recited in the car, the shower, the market, etc).
Last week we discussed

writers» group, and came up with some great tips.
Usually, the homepage or landing page of an author's website will feature the
writer's latest project (with a
blurb, a click - to - buy feature, and testimonials or reviews), but you might also include a «dear reader» letter.

There's a simple formula of questions a
writer should ask themselves when writing a
blurb.
The pros will continue to put up quality work, with great covers and enticing back cover
blurbs and well edited sampling so that readers will find new authors the same as they always have; having heard about an author from a friend or seeing them mention in a blopg or on a
writers site or panel, maybe an online review, They'll «pick up» the book that looks attractive and interesting, check out the description and maybe reading the first few pages.
Writers simply register, then upload a
blurb and as many chapters of their book as necessary for our website viewers to read and rate.
Writers and researchers create
blurbs for press releases and the like, while designers work on creating your website's layout.

writer from becoming a fan and offering (for instance) a jacket
blurb, or to give your book a shout - out to her followers.
I've seen indie
