The name Great Dane was changed from
German Boarhound due to Germany's tensions with other countries.

bred boarhound, the Siberian husky or the St. John dog.
The breed took on the name German
Boarhound during the 19th century but, as tensions with Germany rose, it came to be known as the Great Dane.
Some commentators believe it originated from the writings of the French naturalist, Count Buffon, who while traveling in Denmark in the 1700's happened upon an
athletic boarhound that he called, «Grand Danois» or «Great Dane».
British people familiar with the breed first referred to Great Danes as
German boarhounds.
The origins of the Great Dane likely date back to ancient Greece when
large boarhounds were featured in frescoes dating back to the 14th and 13th century BC.
It was called the German Mastiff, German
Boarhound, or German Dogge.
As the name implies,
boarhounds are dogs that are specifically bred for hunting wild boars.
Originally known as the German
Boarhound, this breed took on its current name sometime during the mid to late 1700s.
In the centuries that followed,
these boarhounds were crossed with other ancient breeds such as the Suliot dog and the Molossian hound to increae the breed's stature.
The Great Pyrenees,
the Boarhound, and the Mastiff are among the possible contributors to the Newfoundland's genetics, and some contend that Basque fisherman were responsible for bringing the Newfoundland's ancestors to the Newfoundland coast.
Hence, it is oftentimes called
a boarhound in writings of this period.
Eventually the breed made its appearance in America during the 1870's, and was originally referred to as a German Mastiff or
Boarhound.
In fact, the Great Dane's ancestors are visible on Egyptian ruins dating all the way back to 3,000 B.C.. There's some debate over whether his origin is Denmark or Germany, but we also know that the Great Dane was bred as a «
Boarhound» — meant to hunt the intimidating European wild boar, the Great Dane is a combination of unmatched size and surprising speed.
