A coming - of - age tale conveyed with deftly handled emotional complexity and chilling thematic subtext, Raw is above all else a gut twisting work of
classic body horror.
The master of the specific subgenre called
body horror and the man who put out such
classics as Dead Ringers and Videodrome, the Canadian filmmaker David Cronenberg seemingly stepped out of his (dis) comfort zone and delivered one of the best movies of the first decade of this century when he made the film cleverly and multilayeredly called A History of Violence.
The connection to
classic American tough - guy movies isn't always apparent in his celebrated
horror films, but it's all over the
body of work he produced in relative obscurity before he finally caught a break with Cure.
It's still reminiscent of
classic body horror like The Thing and Bodysnatchers, and there's a few tips of the hat to The Descent and Pan's Labyrinth, but the most explicit nod goes to Sam Raimi.
But what makes it a
classic is that, like «Get Out,» a
body - snatching movie about racism, or «The Babadook,» a supernatural
horror film about childhood fears, it also works so well on so many other levels.
With the home vid sector providing a hunger for genre product, David exhibited a commitment to stylishly executed
horror works, including two from director Jean - Claude Lord, the hospital
horror cult
classic Visiting Hours (1982) and sci - fi /
horror of The Vindicator (1986); George Pan Cosmatos» paranoid infestation thriller Of Unknown Origin (1983), with Peter Weller; Sandor Stern's
body -
horror shocker Pin (1988); and, VHS hit The Dentist (1996) and its sequel (1998), from
horror icon Brian Yuzna.
Since its initial release, this version of Invasion of the
Body Snatchers has undergone a critical reappraisal and is recognized as an underrated sci - fi and
horror classic which is actually better than the original version.
It is an impressive feat, as Spring often seems on the brink of flinging itself into orbit at any minute, but the soulful and engaging turns from leads Lou Taylor Pucci and Nadia Hilker, and beautiful Italian vistas (fully taken advantage of through some gorgeous top down helicopter establishing shots) and some real confidence from Benson and Moorhead to stick to their guns makes Spring a unique and satisfying twist on both
classic romance and old school
body horror.
