I'd recommend using United miles to
book Lufthansa
first class — you avoid the higher surcharges that are now charged with Aeroplan
awards, you don't face Starnet blocking as you do with US Airways (more about that below) and you use a lot fewer miles than you would with Miles & More miles, although it's true that only Lufthansa's Miles & More members get advance access to
first class award space.
This of course does not mean there will be any Lufthansa
First Class award space for the particular flight you want, just that you won't be able to
book it, if available, further in advance than that.

You can't
book international
First class, which takes away flexibility when trying to find premium cabin
award space.
Award space is better within a week of departure compared to any other time that I've seen, and it looks like it's the only time you can
book two people in
First Class.
