book, written by a Protestant, evidences an admirable ecumenical and historical reach.
Admittedly, it takes me over 300
pages in the
book mentioned above to try to spell
out with some degree
of adequacy just what criteria, what mode
of argumentation, what evidence, what methods seem most appropriate for rendering theological discourse an explicitly public discipline.
Tom, it's so absurd that I have to respond every time I read this... and I pulled a

(I must admit that pointing
out what is not covered in a nearly 500 -
page book opens a reviewer to charges
of masochism.
Because a perfectionist knows he or she can't erase a relational blemish or just tear that
page out of their
book, many choose not to even start.
We may be tempted to leave
out Philemon because it is so badly attested in the second century and because debates later arose about its inspiration; but we must finally — after all these calculations — remember that if the scribe wrongly calculated the number
