One important point to remember when using United miles to
book this flight is that Lufthansa only releases first class
award space to its Star Alliance
partners 14 days before departure.
Unlike with Delta
award flights, you will have to call Korean Air to
book as their online search function only allows you to search for
award space on SkyTeam
partners.
To find
award space on United flights to Sydney (SYD) and
book with ANA Mileage Club miles, you simply need to run a search for
partner awards on ANA's website.

There must be MileSAAver

partners other than American or US Airways.)
This is not only a better deal (if available) but also reflects the
award space provided to other
partners if you decide to
book through a different loyalty program.
They told me they would not / could not honor the SWISS First
booking, but they could reaccommodate me on another carrier or in another class of service if we could find
partner level
award space available.
If you are more flexible and using a
partner program to
book, start looking for Lufthansa first class
award space 15 days prior to your departure.
Award space is almost never released to
partner airlines like United in advance, but you can usually find it within two weeks of departure — perfect for those who are willing to
book last - minute and take a small risk.
For one magical morning this past fall SWISS not only released First
award space for
partner bookings.
Non-alliance
partner awards can not be found on the Asia Miles website, so you'll need to look up
award space elsewhere (such as the operating airline's website) and then call Asia Miles to
book the ticket.
Use the sites indicated below to search for
partner award space then call Virgin Atlantic to complete your
booking.
Recently, some international business class
award space between Australia and Singapore has been available to
partners for
award bookings.

Etihad is another American Airlines
partner, and we've previously described how to find Etihad
award space and call American to
book it.
This is unfortunate because only the cheapest
awards on a given route are made available to
partners — either other airlines releasing
award space to Delta customers or
awards that Delta might let you
book with another program.
To find available
award space, search for available flights on the
partner airline's website and then call Virgin Atlantic to
book.
Booked SWISS First One day back in November 2017 SWISS released
partner award space in their First Class cabin.
While you can't

partners 14 days before departure.
(Be warned: it's possible the
award space will disappear before the transfer takes place, but KrisFlyer is generally a good program for
booking other travel on Singapore Airlines and its Star Alliance
partners, including United Airlines.)
The huge diversity of transfer
partners means that you can find
award space in the program you want to use and then transfer the points to
book that
award.
Because many airlines only release their premium cabin
space to members of their own frequent flyer programs, transferring American Express points gets you access you don't have when you

Use the websites of some of their
partners (ANA for Star Alliance or British Airways site for oneworld) to find the
award space, and then call in to American or United to
book the
award.
I remain deeply unsatisfied with the indifference US Airways has shown to
booking Lufthansa
award space I wrote about last week, but US Airways miles remain highly valuable, particularly when compared to
partner Star Alliance carriers.
Delta agents especially are a problem because they don't know who their
partners are much of the time, let alone how to look for
award space (Skyteam is making progress but isn't as normalized in what
booking codes to use for
award space across the different members of the alliance as Star and oneworld are).
The problem Louise is running into arises because, unlike Thai First Class and Asiana First Class, Lufthansa First Class
awards are only available to United and Star Alliance
partners up to 15 days in advance (see Lufthansa First Class
Award Space:
Booked 15 Days in Advance).
In order to
book these flights with
partner airlines, American Airlines must have
award space at the SAAver level.
Anytime you are looking to
book award flights with a
partner, it is usually helpful to first go to the airline that is operating your flight to search for
award space.
* You can also use Delta's website to search for availability but keep in mind that in order to
book a Delta flight with either of the Ultimate Rewards Skyteam
partners, there must be
award space available at the saver level on Delta.
