book (and YOU) to literary
agents, they might never ask to
read it; if they don't ask to
read it, they certainly won't ever offer to represent it.

agents don't
read books for pleasure.
You see, a
book needs to come to life with its author knowing what audience is expected to
read it, or else most publishers (and literary
agents) won't be interested in it.
In the course of doing research for a
book like Astoria, which my
agent has called «historical adventure,» I find myself
reading bits and pieces of all sorts of works of nonfiction, as well as explorers» journals and memoirs, history, anthropology and many other eclectic subjects.
That's why I still
read hard copy
books predominately — the «authors / writers / producers» of these works HAVE run the gaunlet of disinterested and jaded first readers, then literary
agents, then publishers» readers, etc..
The even smarter authors
read books, took writing classes, talked to published authors, and went to conferences and talked to
agents and editors, and learned how to improve as a writer.

If you want to sell to a traditional NY publisher, then you probably do need an
agent just to get your
book read.
Meet as many authors and editors and publishers and
agents as you can, take them to coffee if you can, and ask them every question that you can (do not ask them to
read your
book, help you get a contract, or help you sell it — just ask them to share what they know, and thank them with coffee and a nice hand - written note).
But then I think about how many times an
agent may have to
read the ms before she decides it's ready for submission, I'm not surprised
agents have to absolutely love it (and know there's a market for the
book).
