Class availability for two people between Los Angeles and London for next summer I can see very quickly that I'm going to struggle to
book a week - long trip before the middle of August:
As for my return, I
booked Lisbon — Frankfurt — Chicago in Lufthansa First
Class using 62,500 Air Canada Aeroplan miles, transferred from American Express Membership Rewards, and then Chicago - Pittsburgh with 4,500 Avios (there wasn't
availability on the United flight, plus I would have had to have called Air Canada to
book a 3 - flight one - way itinerary which would have incurred a $ 30 phone fee, so I was okay with spending Avios and flying American over United when a terminal change would be required for both).
While a route serviced by an A350 should be an aircraft where premium award seats can be made available, it's likely that
availability for business
class seats will be scarce so I wouldn't rely on
booking these seats with partners like United.
So naturally I
booked the flight that had First
Class availability as I was
booking with miles and the cost was the same.
On the redemption side, the award chart to / from Europe isn't too bad (62,500 miles for a transatlantic one - way in business
class) and you get access to much better
availability on AF / KL's own flights that when
booking with Delta.
As for the rest of the family — my sister and brother - in - law were coming from Atlanta to Mumbai, and there was
availability on Air France in business
class from Atlanta to Mumbai via Paris and back, so I easily helped them
book for 120,000 Skymiles each (it's now 140,000 points).
And since I was having a tough time finding Lufthansa first
class availability out of NYC on my required date, I fortunately found what I needed out of Washington DC Dulles (IAD), on the A340 - 300, and I was able to
book this Lufthansa first
class award 15 days in advance.
Availability:
Availability for two is often very good if you
book far ahead enough in advance — I was able to get three of us in first
class for our Etihad flight.
Given the high fuel surcharges on British Airways, the main other competing product for first
class that actually offers award
availability, Lufthansa first
class remains the one to beat in terms of overall value, when it comes to award
bookings to Europe.
The problem Cathay Pacific is experiencing is high demand for its first
class award seats from those with AAdvantage miles, with these seats often
booked soon after the award calendar opens, leaving no award
availability for its own Asia Miles frequent flyer members who may seek to
book just a few months before the date of departure.
You'll want to
book back - up flights, either using United but
booking on United or other Star Alliance partners that do offer advance
availability (or even Lufthansa Business
class awards for the flights you hope to get first
class on) OR use American AAdvantage or other miles to
book backup flights.
Historically business
class award
availability on Fiji Airways isn't especially good, though I've seen a good amount of space lately, especially if
booking in advance.
High level airline elite status comes with many valuable perks such as free domestic first
class upgrades (when available), elite security lines, waived fees (such as free checked bags, and free changes to award
bookings), improved
availability of award seats, and more.
Delta is actually the best for
booking Australia business
class awards, one of the toughest frequent flyer awards out there, because of their partnership with Virgin Australia (which has the best
availability non-stop between the U.S. and Australia, especially on their Los Angeles — Brisbane flight).
