Of course if you look
at my site you'll find that I don't do 70,000 word
books anymore and actually believe that nearly any non-fiction subject can be covered in one tenth of that - we were writing those 70,000 words to fit a
physical format made for
book store displays.
10 dollars is absolutely absurd when you can get them for free in
physical form
at a library, not to mention used
books stores where they cost less than 3 dollars
at times..
The ridiculous hoop jumping that authors have to endure in order to have their
books even sold in a «real» bookstore, let alone featured, means that indie
physical stores have the power to offer authors something they can't get otherwise, while
at the same time not simply competing as violently with major online retailers.
Where the playing field is not even is when we look
at how print
books get sold and purchased in advance of publication, then stocked on
physical store shelves.
Research has shown that people discover and purchase
books from simply looking
at books in both
physical and online
stores.
I believe it is a matter of value and as long as each
store offers different things we value (like
book signings
at physical stores or free shipping) both will continue to stay in business.
For example: A lot of people have the habit of going into a
physical store, looking
at books and then turning around and buying the e-book wirelessly from Amazon.
My
books (the
physical ones, obviously) are sent back as returns to my publisher fairly quickly if they're not selling fast enough
at B&N / BAM / other
stores.
Further this means people are shopping
at Amazon where indie
books take up a significant presence, and gaining exposure they do not get from
physical book stores.
With so many
books available, both in print and online, most consumers are only looking
at your
book for a few mili - seconds while browsing through an online or
physical store.
HarperCollins Australia recently ran a short trial, «bundling» e-
book with
physical book purchases late last year in
store at Pages & Pages Booksellers and online with Boomerang
Books.
And «
physical book sales on a comparable basis increased by 4 percent
at Barnes & Noble
stores, exhibiting growth for the first time in five years.»
That way, whether they are browsing online or in a
physical store, your
book catches their attention, tugs
at their emotions, and creates the urge to buy now.
