For example, the polar
bear specimen from roughly 120,000 years ago survived in Svalbard
during a warm
interglacial period because that Arctic archipelago remained more frozen than other areas.
There is published work on polar
bears employing alternative foraging strategies (Andy Derocher — yes from the PBI website — is an author of a great one on them hunting caribou), my work supports this possibility (see / / www.nytimes.com/2007/06/05/science/05prof.html)-RRB- and the polar
bear skull found in Svalbard believed to have existed
during the last
interglacial further supports this.
