In the
process of knowing him, I began to sort things
out and realized there was a generation
of artists
born after the end
of World War II who could not be fairly held responsible for what took place before their birth and were very aware
of their past and wanted to make amends.
The Malaysian -
born, London - based artist uses the overly precious setting
of the gallery space to pull objects — cooking utensils, kitchen fittings, plastic tubs, sheets
of jute, etc —
out of their utilitarian context in such a way as to force viewers to think about them as discrete objects, or things in and
of themselves, while in the
process challenging the assumptions we make about their functionality and attendant concerns such as, for example, the social status
of the person who might own such an object, its role in their lives and that relation in respect to one's own style
of living.
The positioning
of the figures must have been decided upon fairly early in the production
process as a photograph
of the work, taken when the figures were roughed
out and still
bore the artist's pencil markings, shows an arrangement close to the final composition (comparative illustration).
As they bring the making - as - thinking
process literally
out into the open and invite visitors to make and think along with them, they will build a collection
of things on the Walker's lawn, things which
bear a striking resemblance to the precious, unique treasures inside.
And even while they become more graphic, they are still
born from an organic
process that feels
out of control ninety percent
