bought Mobipocket in 2005.
When Amazon
bought Mobipocket, it stopped carrying all those other formats and stopped using Lightning Source as its delivery service for ebooks.
(The fact that publishers adopted ePub only after Amazon
bought Mobipocket is another discussion entirely.)
It was what Amazon did
buying Mobipocket pre-Kindle, and it worked.

Otherwise it wouldn't make sense for Google to keep Kindle out as they could easily attract millions of current Kindle owners who already
buy and appreciate eBooks by supporting DRM - free
Mobipocket format.

Mobipocket SA, a French company, in 2000, which was then
bought over by Amazon in 2005.
If you
buy an eReader or
Mobipocket, there is no limitation on devices you can read an ebook on so long as you enter in the correct unlock code.
