COTTAGES & BUNGALOWS McBee Cottages has ten units in two buildings that feature white bead - board interiors and
box beamed ceilings in classic Cape Cod style for that classic beach atmosphere.
The DIY fireplace surround is made of two pillar supports and a
MDF box beam header.
And using miters you can get a great looking
box beam mantel that is a fraction of the weight (and cost) of getting a true full sized solid beam.
The overhangs on the gable ends were cut off, rigid insulation added to the top (Photograph 6) and then the overhangs rebuilt
as box beams (Photograph 7).
A texture difference is achieved between the walls and
box beams by using flat siding on the beams and a deep board and batten on the walls.

With original mahogany stain woodwork,
box beam ceilings, and bird's - eye maple and red fir floors, this home is a magnificent example of built - to - last elegance.
The
MDF box beam is made from 3/4 ″ MDF and 1 × 4 pine supports and has a solid front and bottom with an open back and top.
Why not just cut the original rafters flush with the wall as well and do
the box beam thing on the front similar to what was done on the gable ends?
Had I added a bunch of insulation to the walls as well at the same time making the wall much thicker thereby reducing the overhang I would have done
the box beam approach like I did when I fought the ants (see BSI - 056: Leiningen vs. The Ants Redux).

Then
the box beams were trimmed out (Photograph 8) and a double frieze board installed to hide the increase in roof thickness without requiring redoing the gable end siding (Photograph 9).

Board and batten, archways,
box beam ceilings, built - ins, special doors... any of these things would be more than welcome to be part of my dream home.
I like clean, straight lines, so curvy archways aren't my thing, but
a box beam ceiling?
In this kitchen,
the box beams on the ceiling are a sunny shade of yellow to match the cabinets.
A nice pine trim sits above
the box beam.
Litchfield added a beadboard ceiling and
box beams, and Lanham brightened the space with white paint.
Finally, the walnut mantel rests on the MDF
box beam and screws through the back of the top secure it to a 2 × 4 that is attached to the wall studs.
I used some old circular sawn walnut that I got from a local sawyer south of Nashville for
the box beam mantel.
The top support will later be used to secure the MDF
box beam to the pillars of your DIY fireplace surround.
The box beam header will support the reclaimed box beam fireplace mantel.
The MDF
box beam is then screwed down to the pillars and into the wall.
