I mean, it can, that's for sure, but it
seems to me that the
practices of our hospitals and the expectations of our culture make that magical, easy latch - on somewhat elusive for many moms who desire to
breastfeed.
When more women openly
breastfeed, it normalizes the
practice and it will not
seem as unusual to others.
Granted
breastfeeding is not possible or suitable for everyone - «fed is best» after all - but it
seems ridiculous to me that we need to raise the profile of
breastfeeding in public as an acceptable
practice.
Indeed,
breastfeeding also
seems to be related to
practices that reduce the risk for suffocation.
There
seems to be an inherent wisdom in this approach, because although I know of some women who have
practiced intermittent fasting while
breastfeeding (under the supervision of their doctor), I personally needed to eat during late night nursing sessions in order to feel my best.
