Breastfeeding with HIV, is breast still best?
Breastfeeding support is the most effective method of primary disease prevention ranking far above
supports such as vaccinations (see The Lancet Child Survival series) and other interventions that we have
available to us.
Some parent / infant dyads have issues that prevent meeting their
breastfeeding goals (or current recommendations on
breastfeeding duration), and we
support them in providing the best nutrition
available for their child (which may well include infant formula).
Some of our classes and services include Sleep Coaching (
available remotely), Positive Parenting, Childbirth Education (Weekend and One Day),
Breastfeeding Support, New Mommy Classes, CPR Class and Newborn Care.
Free
breastfeeding services are
available in most areas through volunteer mother - to - mother
support organizations and public health departments.

It was revealed later that my daughter most likely had a lip tie, which the pediatrician was not adept at diagnosing (we live abroad and professional
breastfeeding support did not appear to be readily
available to us at the time).

support and advice with

available around the clock — after all,
breastfeeding happens at any time of the day and night!
Women who want to
breastfeed, and their husbands, can become educated about
breastfeeding in advance, and plan to give birth in a place where good

available.
There is a lot of advice
available for helping you with
breastfeeding and you should be able to find that your local midwife,
breastfeeding support counsellor or health visitor will be able to help you overcome any issues simply by observing and offering you further tips.

Mothers, fathers, and grandmothers - to - be came in large numbers to the twice monthly
breastfeeding workshops, gaining confidence and information, with the expectation of the
support that would be
available to them to help them achieve their goals.
One research summary found that after reviewing all
available studies regarding the outcomes of using IBCLCs, mothers who had higher
breastfeeding initiation rates, a longer duration of exclusive
breastfeeding, a longer duration of any
breastfeeding, higher
breastfeeding rates for all infant age groups, AND better maternal and infant health outcomes as compared to those who didn't seek out IBCLC
support (5).
Like walking, when
breastfeeding is normal there will be better
support available for those that may encounter difficulties because it simply won't be acceptable to ignore
breastfeeding problems any more than it would be acceptable to ignore problems walking.

Information is given on what
support is
available, and how to find it for all aspects of the postpartum experience, including the early weeks after giving birth,
breastfeeding, postpartum depression, returning to work, being a stay - at - home mom, and coping after subsequent births.
It seems as though there is an abundance of information and
support available for the early initiation stage of
breastfeeding (thankfully!).
When we think about the
available options for
breastfeeding support, a few professionals immediately come to mind: the lactation consultant (of course), the physician, nurse, midwife, and doula.
