Just like you can't judge a book by it's cover, every
dog that unfortunately ends up
in a
shelter, should not be judged by what
breed the
dog is, especially if the
shelter employees assume that the
dog in question is a certain
breed, their chances
of being adopted may be lessened.
Part
of our advocacy efforts includes educating the public on various aspects
of living with
dogs, with or without disabilities, to encourage adoption, especially
of these ostracized
breeds that are
in great numbers
in shelters everywhere due to overpopulation and the bans on pit bulls (read more about
Breed - Specific Legislation and other BS discrimination).
Too many
dogs end up

of misguided purchases from those who have bought
in to the myth that low shedding or so - called hypoallergenic
dog breeds are zero maintenance.

Mixed
bred dogs are seen as inferior and since no one is interested, most
of these are rounded up and die
in an animal
shelter.
Too many
dogs of this
breed end up surrendered
in a
shelter or an Australian Cattle

in many cases, unknown prior ownership.

The fact is that this is a human caused problem and it's sad just like the overabundance
of cats and
dogs in this country which cause 10 million
of them to be killed each year
in shelters while people still
breed more (ignorance).
This restriction also applies to
dogs in Victorian
shelters and pounds, with any
dog identified as a restricted
breed unable to be rehomed (which means that regardless
of a
dog's temperament it will be killed).
Unfortunately many
of the pit bulls and pit bull mixes you would come across
in city
shelters or similar locations, have been
bred, kept and trained as fighting
dogs, or were kept as guard
dogs by drug dealers to be aggressive to any humans other than their owners.
Not only is heartworm highly contagious, a positive diagnosis is incredibly time consuming and expensive to treat (Blumenfeld says the cost averages $ 600 for small
dogs and $ 2,000 for larger
breeds), an unfair fact that often pushes these
dogs to the top
of the kill list
in many
shelters across the country
In order to promote sales and adoptions, many
shelters hide the
breed of pit bull type
dogs, rename them as other
breeds or call them «mixed
breed».
Since
in many places pit bulls make up 30 - 50 %
of the
shelter population, and are less likely to be considered for placement than any other
breed, guessing that 25 %
of those
dogs killed is a reasonable estimate.

of Health Sciences [20 - 21] have found discrepancies between
breed identification and the results
of DNA analysis, and researchers
in Florida found at one
shelter that 50 %
of dogs that were labeled as belonging to a pit - bull - type
breed lacked the DNA

But, with so much time, money, and energy put toward
breeding and showing the perfect
dog,
dog lovers can't help but consider the millions
of pet - perfect
dogs in shelters and rescues across the country,
dogs that deserve the same accolades, the same loving devotion, as their perfectly -
bred cousins.
More than 200
dogs and puppies rescued from a commercial
breeding facility
in Estrie, Quebec last May — along with numerous puppies who were born subsequent to the seizure — are ready to leave the emergency
shelter and be placed for adoption following weeks
of care and rehabilitation.
The National Canine Research Council states that despite a lack
of concrete evidence linking specific
breeds to a higher rate
of dog bites, as well as an outright lack
of success
in reducing the number
of dog - bite related injuries, BSL is incredibly expensive for the communities affected by it, draining resources that could otherwise be used to promote more humane and effective forms
of population control and
in turn, reduce overcrowding
in shelters.

dogs — a mixture
of breeds ranging from the large mastiffs most often considered as «meat
dogs»
in South Korea, to Jindo mixes, Spaniel mixes and Chihuahuas — were transported to
shelters in California, Oregon, San Francisco and Washington State
in the USA.
Purebred pets can become homeless just as easily as mixed
breed dogs, and one quarter
of dogs in shelters are purebred.
