As someone who has worked in the pet care industry for over fifteen years, we often come across puppies from puppy farms &
breeding bitches who have been lucky enough to escape their life of misery.

In order to really produce a quality
breeding, you must find a stud dog
who's bloodlines compliment your
bitch's bloodlines.
For those
who rely on statistical data; Bill and I are owner - handlers
who don't «network», have no dogs at public stud and keep fewer than four
breeding bitches, yet we've had over half of the Akita Hall Of Fame Producers including the # 1 and # 2 Sires and Dams.
A breeder is defined as «any person
who owns, leases or is responsible for any
bitch or dog that is
bred, with the intent of producing at least some of the litter for sale.»
Any dogs that are showing signs of any of these problems should not be
bred — avoid anyone
who is
breeding dogs with genetic problems, or
who is not testing their dogs and
bitches.
A person that
breeds from a
bitch who lives as a family pet or has a good life as a well cared for working dog, is not a puppy farmer because they make a few pounds from their puppies.
This is the person
who owns a pet Westie and thinks it would be «fun» to have puppies, that it would be a great experience for the children, or that the
bitch should be
bred once before she is spayed.
However, we have another problem, when humane activists characterize all breeders as irresponsible and for profit... especially when they ignore the fact that most dogs that end up in shelters come from backyard breeders,
who may only own a
bitch or 2, but don't take any responsibility for the dogs they
breed.

bitches who produce a certain number of titled offspring.
I personally spoke to a man
who was
breeding a severely hip dysplastic
bitch he got a champion title on before her hips became apparent.

Veterinary technology has smears and ovulation tests to determine when the
bitch is ready to be
bred but there is no substitute for a working stud dog and an experienced owner
who can read the dog.
Breeders
who maintain three or more
breeding bitches have revealed low infertility, unusually small litter size, or reduced sexual aggression in their bloodlines.
Stud dogs or
bitches who produce offspring of consistently poor quality in their first two
breedings have no value as
breeding stock and should not be
bred again.
The owner should discourage the individual
who wants to
breed a
bitch lacking in quality or one unsuitable for the stud, and explain why.
Stop allowing Councils to grant licences to breeders
who intend to use disused agriculture barns, cow sheds, calving pens, pig styes and disused refrigerated trailers for kenneling their
breeding bitches as Councils do now.
Stud dogs or brood
bitches who produce offspring of consistently poor quality or with genetic problems known to be inherited in the
breed are therefore of no value as
breeding stock and should not be used again, except in
breedings directed towards test mating or health research.
The stud owner should discourage the individual
who wants to
breed the pet quality
bitch or one unsuitable for the stud in question, and explain why this is necessary.
Owners
who are considering
breeding their
bitch should discuss with their veterinarian how best to ensure that she is properly treated for roundworm infection before and during her pregnancy.
These «breeders» sell puppies to brokers,
who generally sell them to pet stores, and
breed their
bitches every time they come into heat, sometimes twice each year.

breeding was to be done ONLY be highly reputable / quality knowledgeable / experienced Breeders.
Best of
Breed — This is the dog,
who in the eyes of that judge on that particular day, is the closest to the Official
Breed Standard of those dogs and
bitches viewed in the ring.
The winners of both Winners Dog and Winners
Bitch will go back in the ring one more time for the Best of
Breed Class and compete for Best of Winners and also against the Champions of Record
who will be competing for Best of
Breed and Best of Opposite Sex.
Some by age, some by
who bred the dog or
bitch, some by how much they have shown and if they have won points previous to the current show.
