The most intense bursts of starbirth are thought to have taken place in the early Universe in massive,
bright galaxies containing lots of cosmic dust.

This plot reveals that not all the starlight is
contained within the cities of stars — the
galaxies — which appear as
bright blue - white blobs.
In addition to the
bright and chaotic features, each merging
galaxy of NGC 5256
contains an active galactic nucleus, where gas and other debris are fed into a hungry supermassive black hole.
Such clusters have very dense cores, each
containing a massive
galaxy called the «
brightest cluster
galaxy» (BCG).

bright stars can drown out dimmer
galaxies like the 72 new ones, none of which
contain stars Hubble can see.

This young cluster of about 3,000 stars in our Milky Way is called Westerlund 2 and
contains some of the
galaxy's hottest,
brightest, and most massive stars.
