I agree with the overall
scenario (and was actually thinking of posting something
similar), except that I suspect that instabilities and the Earth's rotation would cause the pattern to
break up into relatively narrow latitudinal bands perhaps as little as a few tens of kilometres wide, with a sort of helical circulation
in each (like a rope).
