Union leaders remain fiercely defensive — about corruption in their ranks, allegations of
brutality against inmates and about the need for punitive segregation to keep staff safe.
The main goal of the protestors is
against Wall Street corruption and greed, but the group has rallied
against a number of other issues, including unemployment, economic inequality, college tuition rates, police
brutality, health care and even the execution of Georgia death row
inmate Troy Davis.
Addressing these factors in sentencing through Gladue - type cultural assessment reports will not prevent
brutality against Black
inmates, or resolve the social and economic circumstances which lead to overrepresentation of Blacks in Canadian prisons.
