Tumulty JW, Broussard JD, Steiner JM, Peterson ME, Williams DA: Clinical effects of short - term
oral budesonide on the hypothalamic - pituitary - adrenal axis in dogs with inflammatory bowel disease.
Prednisone (prednisolone) is the steroid of choice, although a safer drug
called budesonide, which is less systemically bioavailable, may control some IBD patients.
Some commonly used corticosteroids are
budesonide (Pulmicort), fluticasone (Flovent), and triamcinolone (Azmacort).
Some drugs are sold in combinations such as fluticasone and salmeterol (Advair) or
budesonide and formoterol (Symbicort).
These drugs — which include Advair (fluticasone and salmeterol) and Symbicort (
budesonide and formoterol)-- help prevent asthma attacks, but they do not stop an episode that has already started.
A newer corticosteroid which shows promise in IBD is
budesonide (Entocort ® EC).
Other immunosuppressive medicines include azathioprine, chlorambucil and
budesonide.
