Is it me or are
bulk bins NOT the way to go if you have allergies?
Additionally, shopping in
the bulk bin not only encourages us to eat more whole foods and avoid packaged products but from a holistic point of view, encourages us to start thinking about meals in advance.

I got some in the
bulk bins quite some time ago and they've been living in glass jars, but I'm just
not sure if I need to compost and start over?
I didn't have corn starch, but I had some white powder from the
bulk bins that I threw in and that seemed to work fine.
If you choose to purchase seeds from a
bulk bin, make sure they smell fresh —
not musty, spoiled or stale, which could indicate rancidity or the presence of fungal mycotoxins.
I usually buy my quinoa at Costco, but its in the
bulk bins at Whole Foods as well if you don't want to make a Costco - sized commitment.

price wise it wasn't that bad at all either... i only had the oats, coconut butter and olive oil, so i had to buy all the rest, but i just went to sunflower market and bought everything from the
bulk bins, so total it was maybe $ 6, which i think is reasonable considering its making like 8 or 10 cups of granola / cereal!

I love

not just for stocking up on soup ingredients, but also things like, since I bake so infrequently, I'm the person who buys one cup of pastry flour at a time, lol, rather than that three - pound bag that will go rancid before my next homemade pie craving.
I bought a small amount of tapioca flour from a store that sells everything in
bulk bins - so unfortunately I don't know what brand it was.
It wasn't the pan coating and even under magnification we couldn't identify it, so, especially considering the oats came from a

Whole Foods has a «try before you buy» policy that you can and should use to your fullest advantage — and it's
not just relegated to the

bin is hygienically covered and the store is a busy one (so you'll know the seeds haven't been sitting there for weeks!).

While it probably won't be possible to avoid single - use packaging entirely, you can majorly cut back on it by sticking to the perimeter of the stores and browsing

In terms of money, I think making your own milk at home can be super economical if you 1) get your almonds or whatever base you're using from
bulk bins or when they're on sale and 2) make sure you don't make so much that you waste it.
So, I decided to cook some Oatmeal instead (
not the quick cooking ones but the regular kind that you can find in the
bulk bins at health food stores) and I ate it with a piece of Ezekiel bread slathered with some Peanut Butter (Yum!).
Update: My local Whole Foods uses RedStar in their
bulk bins, which unfortunately did
not provide information to Dr. Greger, so I will have to find a new source!
We have a bit of a situation over here with
bulk candy
bins every which way we turn in Stockholm, so
not eating refined sugar is a conversation I frequently have with myself when I am trying to avoid them.

It is best
not to buy grains from
bulk bins as grains tend to go rancid quite easily.

bulk bins - I can get the right amount of cashews and

bulk bins, you may want to consider taking advantage of their savings.

not buy pellets from
bulk bins at feed stores.
1) I started a grocery shopping «kit» that contains jars and bags to reuse for the
bulk bin (I'm still
not ready to dive into washable
bulk bin bags yet — since it's one more purchase to make and one more thing to manage).
It definitely won't fit in your recycling
bin, but most bigger cities offer
bulk waste collection programs to pick up large items from the curb.
Also my only local
bulk store that lets you use your own jars and bags fills their
bins from big plastic bags so I'm
not sure it even makes a difference.
