Crib bumpers pads can cause suffocation or, in the case of older babies who can use
the bumper pads as footing, falls.
Don't bother with sets that include
bumper pads as we don't recommend using them (see our 7 Things below for more on bumpers).

Frustrated by what they see
as the «damned - if - you - do, damned - if - you - don «t» nature of traditional
bumpers, some of these parents have turned to alternative products, such
as mesh crib
bumpers or crib slat
pads, in an effort to find a safe solution.
As an alternative to
padded bumpers, line your baby's crib rails with mesh guard panels to prevent any tiny limbs from getting stuck through the slats.

bumper pads or any other items such
as pillows or covers in the crib while your baby is actually sleeping in it.
Many crib bedding companies package their products
as sets that often include a crib sheet, comforter and crib
bumper pad.
Don't allow soft objects such
as stuffed animals, pillows or
bumper pads in the crib because they pose a risk to newborns if their face becomes covered.
Any soft items such
as blankets, pillows, stuffed animals, or
bumper pads are considered a safety hazard and increase the chances of SIDS.
I'm shocked that
bumper pads are sold so widely (and we pay lots of money for them
as part of the entire crib decor package) when they pose such a safety risk.
However, research has shown that it is best to not have the comforter and
bumper pads in the crib
as they can contribute to SIDS when the baby is less than a year old.
The seat has a 5 - point
padded safety harness, three recline positions and
bumper bar, and of course, it is removable and reversing, with recline positions in parent - facing mode
as well.
While there is no snack tray, your child gets a
padded bumper bar to hang on to, which doubles
as the adapter for the car seat.
To delay that possibility, remove any «climbing aids» such
as bumper pads, pillows or toys, and lower the mattress to the lowest possible position within the crib.
Other bedding materials and crib decorations such
as pillows, blankets, stuffed animals, and
bumper pads are all hazards to your baby and should not be in the crib.
There's a removable center
pad that can be machine - washed and the outer
bumper can be removed
as well.

bumpers — cushioned
padding that attaches to the inside railings of the crib — are sometimes still included in crib bedding sets, but a number of organizations, including the AAP, now discourage them
as a SIDS hazard for babies.
No soft bedding or pillows should be in the sleep space, including crib
bumper pads, and you should check for other hazards nearby, such
as cords, choking hazards, or places where baby could fall.
And remember: No
bumper pads — a child might use those
as a step at this age.
Once your child can pull up, take out the
bumper pads which can be used
as stepping tools, and put the mattress in its lowest position.
A more recent study of crib injuries that used data from the CPSC National Electronic Injury Surveillance System concluded that the potential benefits of preventing minor injury with
bumper pad use were far outweighed by the risk of serious injury such
as suffocation or strangulation.197 In addition, most
bumper pads obscure infant and parent visibility, which might increase parental anxiety.195 There are other products that attach to crib sides or crib slats that claim to protect infants from injury.
Crib
bumpers probably do prevent some injuries caused by babies» limbs getting entrapped between crib slats and heads getting bonked against the hard crib sides, but
as the CPSC noted in a November 2016 statement, «we strongly believe that the risk of death from

bumpers far outweighs any purported benefits.»
