Note: If your pot is too big the sugar syrup will be more likely to
burn as the temp will rise too quickly and the thermometer will have trouble reading correctly.
and even then i monitored a very similar 229cc cg type to your 230cc cb type with an infra red thermometer and still didn't detect the valve
burn as the temp on the head was in spec while obviously too hot in the chamber.

I found the
temp of 425F / 220C to be way too high and lowered it substantially to 375F / 190C
as the first batch almost
burnt.
I think the organic sugar needs to be cooked at a little slower
temp as it seems to
burn easier.
If
as you say engine
temps stayed normal then I would guess that this maybe excess coolant or oil that has run along the rocker cover or has ended up trapped in the recesses on the outside of the cylinder head, and this is
burning off when it comes into contact with the hotter exhaust port area.
