I enjoyed my premium
economy and business class flights between DFW - LAX so much that I've been
looking at dates to try out the 787 - 9 Dreamliner on international routes.
All three US legacy carriers now offer some form of Basic
Economy fares, American has only just backed away from the idea of introducing cabins with just 29 ″ of legroom, United got everyone excited with its Polaris
Business Class product up until the point we realised that it will be a gazillion years before it's fully rolled out
and Delta has a long haul fleet that makes Mel Brooks
look young.
I've been on the
look out for good fares since the beginning of August
and, while American did post a somewhat tempting
Economy Class fare from London back in September, the
Business Class fares out of Europe have come nowhere near what I'm prepared to pay....
I'm not
looking forward to the introduction of Premium
Economy because (a) I fully expect it to be the end of upgrades from
Economy to
Business Class and (b) because I don't expect it to be worth what American will charge for it.
For transatlantic
Business Class I'll
look to book an award on American Airlines, Air France or Iberia
and, if those aren't available I'll turn my attention to cash fares (both
Business and Economy Class).
When you consider that the
Business Class layout
and seats
look very similar to what Etihad has on its 777 - 300ER aircraft
and that even the
Economy Class seats come with foot rests, USB sockets, power outlets
and large screen entertainment systems, then this doesn't
look like an out - of - date airline at all.
Because of this I thought I'd run a 3 - part series
looking at the changes that are coming
and how they will affect those of us who mostly book discounted
Economy Class fares
and discounted
Business Class fares — if you book the more expensive fares then you're in luck
and you'll be doing just fine.
The addition of the 787 - 9 to the Dallas — Paris route is a big improvement in hard product for
Business Class passengers (not so much for
Economy Class passengers
looking for a bit of room)
and will offer the Premium
Economy product that some have been
looking forward to (I'm definitely not one of them!)
The «all - new» premium
economy seat will launch on the Airbus A350 aircraft in February 2016, alongside the new

looks to be a significant improvement on the current seat.

economy on BA flight to Hong Kong, 61A was a very good seat because - extra legroom in front - nobody reclining in front of you - quieter cabin with
business class in front, no toilet queues or gallery noise - good standard of food even though basic - entertainment wasn't brilliant choice - seat itself was comfy - little tight (I'm 6» 2») but ample room to stretch
and sleep - certainly worth the difference from
economy - they
looked really packed in.
The first option I
looked at was Singapore to Phuket, Thailand in
economy and business class.
The second I chose to
look at was Singapore to Denpasar - Bali, Indonesia in
economy and business class.
